RSA Geotechnics were involved in a geotechnical site investigation at the site of a proposed development for Fulbourn Hospital, Cambridge, to establish whether any solution features existed beneath the site. The site was underlain by Zig Zag Chalk and the client was concerned that there may be solution features beneath the site.
A reconnaissance site visit was undertaken and a day of fieldworks to investigate both the shallow soils for foundation design and investigating on a grid layout the potential for solution features to exist by dynamic probing to depths of approximately 5m. Dynamic probing was undertaken at approximately 5m intervals across the site.
The investigation did not find any voids beneath the site and it was not considered that the foundation design required extra strengthening to enable it to straddle potential voids beneath the site.
